Five ways to relax in the middle of a busy day

We all seem to lead terribly busy lives these days and as a result, finding time for beneficial relaxation can be a challenge.

Often it is not until we’ve finished all the chores of the day that we feel we’re allowed to finally switch off.

Relaxing at the end of the day, however, may have limited benefit.

Instead, ten or fifteen minutes of relaxation in the middle of the day will support you for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Here are five ways to do this:

1. Meditate

All you need is ten minutes of time and a quiet space. Find a comfortable chair or a space to lie down, check that you are suitably warm and comfortable and then simply close your eyes and concentrate fully on the gentle rhythms of your breath. If you find that your mind starts to wonder, counting down from ten to nought and then repeating can help.

2. Walk

A short walk to take some (very) gentle exercise can be surprisingly effective. Simply walk slowly and softly and make no significant decisions or try to influence anything. Instead, take it all in whilst developing a benign and detached view of the world around you.

3. Take your shoes and socks off

This is great for people who spend a lot of time on their feet. You need to, however, ensure your feet are warm, so if you’re in a cool place, wrap them loosely in a towel. Also, placing a small ball such as a stress ball or golf ball on the floor and gently rubbing it under each foot gives a surprisingly effective foot massage.

4. Tune out to some relaxing music

With our mobile ‘phones and iPods we can do this pretty much anywhere, at any time. Choose some music that is quiet, beautiful and meditative and (ideally on stereo headphones) take time to really listen closely to it and let it take you to a calmer place.

5. Book a mini-massage

A lunchtime Indian Head, facial or back and shoulder massage is a wonderful way to relax which can have a significant effect not only on the rest of your day but even the rest of your week. Hands on at Work is the premier provider of highly-qualified on site massage in Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and the West Midlands and we can come to you.
