Desk Yoga

Desk Yoga is an innovative form of yoga that allows participants to practice yoga using a regular chair, making it accessible for those at their desks, whether in an office or at home. The classes are conducted online via Zoom or MS Teams, providing a convenient and flexible wellness solution for the modern workforce.

What is Desk Yoga?

Desk Yoga is a specially adapted yoga practice designed to fit seamlessly into the workday. Unlike traditional yoga that requires a mat and ample space, Desk Yoga can be performed in a standard office chair (preferably not on castors!). This makes it an ideal option for those who spend long hours seated and want to incorporate movement and mindfulness into their routine without leaving their workspace.

Class Structure and Content

Breathing Exercises

The classes begin with breathing exercises that help participants centre their mind and body. These exercises are beneficial for reducing stress and improving concentration.

Asanas (Yoga Postures and Movements)

A variety of yoga postures and movements, known as asanas, are included in the sessions. These movements are carefully chosen to target areas commonly affected by prolonged sitting, such as the neck, shoulders, back, and hips.

Self-Massage

Self-massage techniques are incorporated to relieve tension and promote relaxation. These techniques can be easily practiced during short breaks throughout the day.

Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques are a key component of Desk Yoga, helping to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. These techniques include guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation.

Meditation

The sessions often conclude with a brief meditation, allowing participants to achieve a state of mindfulness and mental clarity.

Accessibility and Adaptability

Desk Yoga is designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of your yoga experience or if you have no yoga experience at all. The exercises can be adapted to accommodate individuals with physical ailments and disabilities, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the practice.

Class Duration and Flexibility

The classes are typically 45 minutes to 1 hour in length, providing a substantial wellness break without taking up too much of the workday. There are no specific rules regarding the number of attendees, making it suitable for both small teams and large groups.

Post-Class Resources

After each session, participants receive a reminder sheet of the exercises covered in the class. This downloadable resource allows them to practice the movements and techniques on their own, reinforcing the benefits of Desk Yoga throughout their workday.

Desk Yoga offers a practical wellness solution for the workplace and home offices, promoting physical and mental wellbeing in a convenient and accessible format.
